Last picture of the roll

I normally don't like the last picture of a roll, I always choose something random to photograph in order to finish it fast and take it to develop.

Last weekend I had a photoshoot and there was only one picture left on the black & white roll after the shoot was over. The day after, I looked outside the window and took this photo.

It was a rainy morning on a bank holiday and I didn't even bother to open the window, which was covered in small rain drops. It's probably one of the first times I can say I actually like the last picture of the roll.

Sunday Zine Review #42: Traum Noir #3-4

I just recently discovered Traum Noir. After having ordered the last issue, I must say that it will definitely become of my must-buy magazines.

Traum Noir is an art magazine based and free distributed in Helsinki, although it can also be purchased on their site for just the shipping price!

The binding and paper of Traum Noir is amazing, it actually feels like a proper book and it's surprising to pay only 3€ or 4€ -depending on the issue- for such a high quality publication.

The magazine's manifesto is also great (believe me, there's nothing bad about Traum Noir). It's nice to see something honest, simple and not pretentious at all, including sentences like:

"We don't believe getting a degree, receiving prizes or doing commercial shows make an artist"

or

"We don't believe in expensive publications as the bibles of art"

Inside its pages, there's a selection of young artists and writers from all around the world, featuring some "Girls on Film"names like Alexander Alekseenko (whose photo book I reviewed here a while ago), Stephanie Gonot, Amanda Jasnowski and Emily-Jane Robinson.

If you want to get this issue, you can read it online and purchase it here.

Summer Haze

I went back home to Spain for a few days a couple of weeks ago. It was the only moment when it really felt like summer.

Here it's raining and it's quite cold and, to be honest, I actually miss not having a proper summer.

Hope you like these snaps I took during those days and also the new logo.

Greetings from The Rain Will Remain!

Sunday Zine Review #41: Now in Lemon 01

From time to time, I also like to review illustration zines. I must admit that I don't know as much about illustration as I do about photography, but I like to flip through this kind of zines, especially if humour is involved.

This is the case of Now In Lemon 01, a collaboration between Owen Priestley (thanks for sending it!) and Dan Drakeford.

Now In Lemon is 40 pages full of drawings and illustrated stories. It is a very chaotic zine containing a bit of everything, but this chaos actually really works well with the DIY aesthetics of Now in Lemon and its content.

The first issue of this publication is only £3 and can be purchased at Now In Lemon. Looking forward to seeing issue 02!

Around a month ago I collaborated again with stylist Katherine Whyte to shoot an editorial for C-Heads Magazine featuring the new collection of Lazy Oaf.

It was a fun Sunday afternoon shooting at Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow with Misha Palmer @ Model Team.

If you want to see the images bigger you can do it at C-Heads or on my website:

Sunday Zine Review #40: Kich-Gorodok by Olya Ivanova

I have received several photo books in the last few weeks, but Kich-Gorodok by Olya Ivanova really stood out.

In this book, the Russian photographer has shot Kich-Gorodok, a small town in the northern part of Russia. Olya travelled with Anna Petrova, a philologist and anthropologist, who collected photos from the family archive of the people Olya portrayed.

Olya and Anna visited several villages around Kich-Gorodok, most of them almost depopulated and with only a few people living in there. Olya explains in the preface of the book that she wanted to shoot these people in the same style as the village professional photographers who used to document the weddings, funerals and different events in the beginning of the 20th century.

Olya has put together a beautiful collection of portraits and daily life scenes happening in this village. Taking a look at the images of the book, you can really tell that she has connected with her subjects, creating really relaxed and personal portraits that wouldn't have been possible without that connection.

The book also includes a selection of the photos that Anna collected during the trip. These images -probably taken by those village photographers- really complement Olya's work, creating again a connection between past and present, and even life and death.

If you're interested in Kich-Gorodok, you can find some more information about it on Olya's site. You can also have a look at the book at the Photo Book Show on 17-19 August in Brighton and 31 August - 2 September in Helsinki.

Thanks a lot Olya for sending the book!

Sunday Zine Review #39: Anteroom by Michela Heim

Link

I discovered Michela's work a couple of years ago. In fact, she was one of the first photographers to have her work published in Girls on Film. In Anteroom, Michela has documented the last 10 years of her life, compiling a selection of photos taken between 2002 and 2012.

If you read my blog regularly, you would have probably seen that some of my favourite photographers are those who use the camera as a tool to record their personal experiences. I love the way Michela does this, using soft tones and creating dreamy atmospheres around the places and subjects she captures.

Browsing through the 80 pages of the book really makes you want to be in all those places Michela has photographed and also wonder who are the people she has portrayed.

The book quality is so nice, printed on beautiful matte paper and perfectly bound. If you're interested in buying a copy, you can find more information about the book on Michela's site.

Thanks Michela for sending the book!
